Sergio, one of Brazil’s most popular artists is performing at Frost Amphitheatre on Saturday, 8th of July 2023! He is recognized throughout the world for creating music that blends traditional Brazilian rhythms, pop and jazz. The singer enjoyed huge success in the US with hits like "Mas Que Nada", "Never Gonna Let You Go" and "Fool on the Hill".
Sergio Mendes began his musical journey at a young age by enrolling in a local conservatory. In his early years, he wanted to work as a classical pianist. But his path took an exciting turn when a bossa nova craze swept Rio de Janeiro in the mid-to-late '50s. At the age of 15, Mendes made the momentous decision to leave classical music behind and embrace the vibrant world of traditional Brazilian music genres.
He later found himself in the company of highly respected figures like Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto, alongside other talented young local musicians. During the mid-1960s, Sergio Mendes and his band Brazil '66 achieved great success on the US music charts by performing renditions of songs originally composed by Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, and Jimmy Webb.
In his 2020 album entitled In the Key of Joy, Mendes once again proves his ability to honor his artistic heritage. The compelling documentary On His Life, which was directed by acclaimed director John Scheinfield, came out at the same time as this album release. An album that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern is the consequence of the record's seamless blending of the traditional jazz and pop tones that have come to define his music.
“One common thread weaves throughout the staggeringly diverse tapestry of music that Sérgio Mendes has created over his remarkable six-decade career: the spirit of joy,” Stanford shares.
Listeners may anticipate the Brazilian jazz and pop tunes that have long defined Mendes' music on the night of the event. His ability to combine genres is definitely evidence of his musical talent and artistic vision.
